The deans of USP, Carlos Gilberto Carlotti Junior, and of the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), Antonio José Meirelles, and the vice-rector of the São Paulo State University (Unesp), Maysa Furlan, met with the State Secretary for Human Rights with Disabilities, Marcos da Costa, to study partnership possibilities between the institutions.

Also participating in the meeting were the Secretariat's special advisor and professor at the USP Faculty of Law, Ignácio Maria Poveda Velasco; and the State Secretary for Science, Technology and Innovation, Vahan Agopyan.

The meeting of representatives of the Council of Rectors of São Paulo State Universities (Cruesp) with the Secretary for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was held at the USP Rectory building, in São Paulo.

“Universities are stores of intelligence to promote public policies and assistive technologies”, stated Costa, at the beginning of the meeting.

Then, the directors of USP, Unesp and Unicamp had the opportunity to talk about actions that are already developed by the institutions and highlighted their willingness to work together with the Secretariat. “We have to add up our experiences and share them. We can also develop cross-cutting projects with other state departments”, said the rector of Unicamp, who currently chairs Cruesp.

The dean of USP highlighted the proposal to create a study center in this area. This center will join those already announced by Carlotti at the end of January: the Center for Sustainable Amazon Studies; the Center for Studies and Technology for Precision Oncology; the Center for the Study of Carbon in Tropical Agriculture; and the Center for Sustainable Agriculture Studies.

As a result of the meeting, each university must indicate the responsible person who will lead the project. The next step will be to map the expertises, the identification of synergies and common policies of the institutions and the prospection of new projects. A document must be prepared and presented at a new meeting to be held with the secretary in March. The signing of a protocol of intentions is also expected to formalize the partnership.
