From a childhood filled with books, encyclopedias and newspapers (but also comic books and superheroes). The preference for humanities, the degree in History and the arrival in Archeology. From Archeology to dictatorships and resistance and gender studies. From USP to Unesp and then to Unicamp. Professor Pedro Paulo Abreu Funari, from the History department of the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences (IFCH) at Unicamp, has already lost count of how many times he has adjusted his academic career to accommodate new interests.
At Unicamp since 1992, Funari promoted archaeological research that gained prominence in academia and in the social and political field. He was one of those responsible for the excavation project in the Palmares region, Alagoas, in the early 1990s, where several archaeological sites were discovered. Excavations demonstrated that, in the settlement, people of different ethnic and cultural origins lived together.
Afterwards, the professor coordinated the study on the archeology of repression and resistance, carried out with researchers from Argentina, Uruguay, Venezuela and Colombia. “We set up a project to rescue the issue of dictatorships in Latin America. The result was the publication “Arqueology of Repression and Resistance — Latin America in the era of dictatorships 1960/1980”.
Funari also served in many administrative positions and presented, on Radio and TV Unicamp, the program Diálogo sem Fronteira. He highlights that Unicamp has always attracted him due to its teamwork, the meeting of several lines and research groups and its multidisciplinary approach.
The Memória Científica program is produced by the Executive Secretariat for Communication - Rádio e TV Unicamp and highlights the personal and professional trajectories of Unicamp scientists.
