The health care model for Unicamp employees and students could be replicated by the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). A delegation from the university of Rio de Janeiro began, this Tuesday (7), a two-day technical visit to the Barão Geraldo campus, in Campinas, to learn about the functioning of the Community Health Center (Cecom) — a body created 37 years ago in the Unicamp and which, today, is responsible for medical and dental care for the academic community, as well as physiotherapy, nursing and occupational health services.
In addition to assistance activities, Cecom has 23 programs and 13 health promotion groups. With 170 employees, it provides approximately 160 services per year. “Unicamp is a great university in Brazil, one of the best. We know that Unicamp has been developing a health care and assistance service for its employees for a long time. And this is a very old request from UERJ”, said the rector of UERJ, professor Mario Carneiro.
“We understand that the time has come to face this challenge. And there is nothing better than coming here and learning from someone who has been doing this for a long time, offering this excellent service to their servers,” she added. Carneiro says that the Administration wants to implement, at UERJ, a model similar to that adopted in Campinas. “Our desire is that we can implement it, yes. I am sure that we will be able to design an important project for our servers”, she stated.
The rector of Unicamp, professor Antonio José de Almeida Meirelles, recalled that public universities often face similar problems, and that the exchange of experiences allows for the improvement of institutional actions. “With this type of exchange, we can accelerate the institutional learning process”, assesses Meirelles.
The rector said he was proud to know that Unicamp could help UERJ in this process, also because this highlights the consolidation of the Cecom model.
“It is undoubtedly a source of pride to help UERJ in this program, but what can be seen is that we, as an institution, have projects, like this one to serve the community, that span several administrations and that are being permanently strengthened. Because of this, they gain a very strong institutional character”, said Meirelles.

Educational and preventive groups
The group visited Cecom facilities and learned about services such as clinical dentistry, which operates from 7am to 19pm. To be assisted, the user must present the Academic Record (RA).
If an employee or student has a health problem that requires quick care, simply look for the Emergency Medical Service, which is open from Monday to Friday.
Among the programs offered by Cecom are Educational and Preventive Groups, which bring together professionals from different areas with the aim of preventing the emergence and worsening of chronic diseases, in addition to guiding participants in specific situations.
Since February 27th, Cecom has held immunization against covid-19 using Pfizer's bivalent vaccine. In the first phase of the campaign, the Health Center served the priority group made up of people over 70 years old, immunocompromised (patients with a compromised immune system, such as HIV positive, transplant recipients or people undergoing cancer treatment) and indigenous people — including employees, teachers and students —, according to the recommendation of the Ministry of Health.
“Cecom is a pearl of Unicamp. And we are proud to contribute to UERJ”, said the general coordinator of Unicamp, professor Maria Luiza Moretti. “I hope this first contact can bear new fruit in areas other than health,” she added.
"We are very happy. For us, it is a great pleasure to participate in this UERJ process. This type of initiative, in fact, is part of our mission and our vision”, said Cecom coordinator, Rôse Trevisane, referring to the body's original proposal to be a qualified multi-professional and interdisciplinary body, recognized by society and a national reference. .
