The libraries of Unicamp, USP (University of São Paulo) and Unesp (Universidade Estadual Paulista) are organizing two joint activities in celebration of librarian month. On March 21st, there will be a visit to the Ipiranga Museum and, throughout the month, the campaign to support prison libraries will be carried out. The libraries of the three universities in São Paulo will collecting books to send them to prison collections in the city of São Paulo and the interior of São Paulo.

Through a partnership with Fundação Prof. Dr. Manoel Pedro Pimentel (Funap), there will be a logistical distribution analysis, depending on the quantity of books donated. If few works are received, the libraries will deliver them to a specific prison unit chosen by the organizers. The executive coordinator of USP Libraries and Digital Collections Agency (ABCD), Adriana Ferrari, explains the importance of this action in prison systems.

“We seek to bring quality to the prison bibliographic collection, after all, access to reading is also a right of the person in prison. Culture and reading have the potential to expand perspectives”, says Adriana. Furthermore, since 2011, with the change in the Penal Execution Law (LEP), it is possible to reduce the sentence through the number of books read.

“For us, these campaigns are important not only to honor the professionals who work in our libraries, but also because of their social importance in encouraging reading, in addition to marking the return of partnerships between libraries in the Council of Rectors of State Universities (Cruesp)”, says Oscar Eliel, director of the Unicamp Library System.
