The Unicamp Mathematics Olympiad (OMU) will be included in the Olympic Vacancy Notice, which will enable medal-winning participants to apply for places in the University's undergraduate courses without taking the Entrance Exam.
Registration for the 39th edition is open and continues until April 6th. Students who participate this year will already have the chance to join Unicamp in the 2024 academic year. The undergraduate courses covered by the Notice will be announced in the second semester, but the organization's expectation is to cover several courses in the exact sciences area.
OMU is aimed at elementary school students (8th and 9th years) and high school students from public and private schools across the country. To participate, you must form a team with three students and a responsible teacher.
The test is divided into three phases. The first two stages are online, and the third, in person, at Unicamp.
To participate in the Olympic Vacancy selection process, the student must reach the third stage, take the group test and another additional individual test — both in person. The student will be able to compete for a place in the undergraduate course as long as they are awarded a medal (gold, silver or bronze) in the individual test.
OMU format and student assessment
OMU differs from other mathematics competitions. Participation is done in teams, and the first phases are open for a week, which allows students to study and learn while answering the questions. In addition to traditional correction, the quality of the text and argumentation are also evaluated in a comparative manner.
According to Marcelo Firer, professor at the Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Computing (Imecc) at Unicamp and one of the organizers of the OMU, the original format of the test makes it possible to assess the ability and preparation of students to enter undergraduate studies.
“During these years of holding the OMU, we have assessed that the participants are very talented and capable. They have high quality mathematics writing, compatible with students at the end of their undergraduate and beginning postgraduate courses,” he said.
The tests are divided into two levels: Alpha (for students in the 8th and 9th years of elementary school) and Beta (for high school students).
Calendar and awards
The first phase of the 39th OMU will take place from April 18th to 24th, and the second, from May 23rd to 29th. The third phase, from which the medalist groups will emerge, will be held in person, at Unicamp, on September 2nd.
The day after the race, September 3rd, an exciting awards ceremony will be held at the University itself, in which gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded to at least 48 teams (192 students and teachers). Teams that stand out for the quality of writing and argumentation of their responses will also be awarded prizes.
The OMU is carried out by the University's Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Computing (Imecc). In 2022, it had a national reach with more than 6 thousand students from 24 Brazilian states, in addition to the Federal District.

Students from public schools whose families are beneficiaries of the Auxílio Brasil program (or any similar program that may replace it) must request, by April 1st, an exemption from the registration fee.
