The team at the Campinas Toxicological Information and Assistance Center (Ciatox) in Campinas warns about the presence of fentanyl in cases of poisoning by drugs of abuse treated in referenced emergency units in the Metropolitan Region of Campinas (RMC) during 2023. On 6/ 7/2016, Ciatox already reported the presence of “LSD” stamps containing fentanyl. Last Sunday (19), Rede Globo published an article regarding the seizure of fentanyl from drug dealers by the Civil Police of Espírito Santo.
Toxicological analyzes carried out by the Toxicological Analysis Laboratory (LTA) of CIATox in Campinas confirmed the presence of fentanyl in cases of abusive use of different psychoactive substances (SPA) such as “K2”, “LSD” and “cocaine”, in addition to one case possible application of a scam with “Good night, Cinderella”.
Given the presence of fentanyl in different SPA, confirmed by toxicological tests, CIATox in Campinas alerts SAMU and Emergency Services to monitor the presence of clinical manifestations suggestive of opioid intoxication, such as miosis and respiratory and neurological depression related to use. abuse of fentanyl present in different types of SPA.
In patients who develop opioid syndrome, particularly respiratory depression, the use of the antidote naloxone is indicated. More details about the indications and use of naloxone in opioid poisoning can be found in the material produced by CIATox in Campinas, available at this website link.
Finally, CIATox suggests that, in all cases of patients suspected of SPA abuse, biological samples be collected, if possible, before procedures and medication use, and sent for toxicological examination at the LTA of CIATox in Campinas, after initial telephone contact with CIATox duty.
