Unicamp's University Council (Consu) approved, in a session held this Tuesday (28), the proposal to grant the title of Professor Emeritus to Ivan Sazima, currently a volunteer collaborating professor at the Institute of Biology (IB). The request had been approved by the unit's Congregation in November 2022 and received a favorable opinion from the Consu Special Committee, formed by professors Sergio Salles Filho, from the Institute of Geosciences (IG), Célio Baptista Haddad, from the Institute of Biosciences at Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp) in Rio Claro, and Miguel Urbano Rodrigues, from the Biosciences Institute of the University of São Paulo (USP).
Sazima has a degree in Biological Sciences from USP, the institution from which he also obtained his master's and doctorate degrees. He joined Unicamp as an IB professor in March 1973. He was a representative of the Postgraduate Subcommittee in Ecology and head of the unit's Zoology Department in the periods of 1981-1983 and 1985-1987. Between 1983 and 1984, he carried out postdoctoral work in Germany. In 1999, he achieved the title of Free Professor and, in 2008, he held the position of Full Professor at IB. His career stands out for his research in Vertebrate Zoology and Marine Biology, also working in the dissemination of topics related to Natural History. His studies also contributed to expanding knowledge about reptiles and amphibians in the Atlantic Forest and the behavior of birds in urbanized areas of the biome.

Throughout his career, Sazima was the author of more than 350 scientific articles, being one of the first professors at Unicamp to publish, as sole author, an article in the magazine Nature. He also published 12 books and 32 book chapters, in addition to being a member of the editorial board of several periodicals around the world. For the excellence of his publications, he received the Jabuti Prize, a type of collective works, for his books Serra do Japi (1992) Pollinators in Brazil (2013) and Guide to Atlantic Forest amphibians (2014). He supervised 32 master's theses, 12 doctoral theses, 20 scientific initiation works and a course conclusion work (TCC) and supervised a post-doctoral internship.
"The science produced by Ivan Sazima has gone beyond national borders. He is internationally recognized for the excellence of his scientific work, living up to the title of Professor Emeritus at Unicamp", highlighted Hernandes Carvalho, director of IB. He highlighted that, in his work at the University, the professor stimulated and influenced a generation of researchers.
The rector of Unicamp, Antonio José de Almeida Meirelles, celebrated the approval of the proposal. "It is extremely important for the University to recognize the role of professors from various areas of knowledge who helped form our undergraduate and postgraduate courses and disseminated and expanded our influence on research carried out in the country", Meirelles pointed out.
