The Women's Hospital Prof. Dr. José Aristodemo Pinotti – Caism inaugurated, this Wednesday (29), the facilities of the new Training and Realistic Simulation Center in Women's and Newborn Health Care. With an area of 514 square meters, the space will be aimed at training doctors and health professionals who work in the areas of obstetrics and neonatology using simulation technologies, such as surgery and laparoscopy equipment operated by robots, human models that reproduce the birth process and software that monitors student performance during procedures. Investments in the unit total around R$10 million, an amount obtained through parliamentary amendments proposed by federal and state deputies.

“This will be the best-equipped center of its kind in the country for training professionals in the field of neonatology before students have direct contact with patients”, assesses Luis Otávio Sarian, superintendent of Caism. The structure of the site has seven rooms, auditorium, common area, pantry and accessibility resources for people with disabilities. In total, 112 pieces of equipment and training items were purchased, offering students the opportunity to experience different surgical contexts.

According to Sarian, health training has the characteristic of depending on the circumstances patients go through. However, with simulation resources, all situations that may occur in practice are experienced by students. During birth simulation, for example, the models – mother and baby – may present different types of conditions and symptoms, requiring specific care. “This brings quality and safety to training. Students can have contact with different clinical situations of patients, which increases learning opportunities,” she explains.

The activities of the new center will be aimed at training undergraduate and postgraduate students at Unicamp and also professionals from the community.

The space also has virtual reality equipment and high-speed internet, which allows training and procedures to be monitored and professionals from anywhere in the world to intervene in real time.

The activities of the new center will be aimed at training undergraduate and postgraduate students at Unicamp and also professionals from the community. The idea is that extension courses will be held in the space and offered by the Unicamp Extension School (Extecamp) and other interface bodies between the University and society. “We intend, for example, to establish agreements with city halls to train public sector doctors. It is a huge benefit for the community”, points out Sarian. Currently, around 1.600 Unicamp students already benefit from Caism's facilities for their training. With the new center, the tendency is for more professionals to visit the location.

New department and area of neonatology

In addition to the new Training Center, the new facilities of the Tocogynecology Department (DTG) of the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM) at Unicamp were inaugurated and new completed stages of the renovation of the Caism neonatology area were presented, in this case, the milk bank and neonatal intensive care units (NICU) and neonatal semi-intensive care units (NICU). The works aimed to modernize the space and adapt it to scientific and technological advances in the sector. The investments made in renovating the environments and in the acquisition and installation of new equipment for the 30 beds – 15 in the ICU and 15 in the Ucin – are in the order of R$30 million, also coming from extra-budgetary sources.

Caism superintendent Luis Otávio Sarian: "Caism's neonatology will be the best equipped within a radius of 200 km"

“This is a very important step for neonatal care in the region. With the renovations, Caism's neonatology will be the best equipped within a 200 km radius”, comments Luis Otávio Sarian. Hospital leaders highlight the modernization of the milk bank, an essential unit for the work carried out by Caism's other sectors. “All care for newborns is based on breastfeeding. Therefore, the human milk bank is the core of all neonatology”, explained Jamil Caldas, coordinator of the Neonatology Division.

The new spaces at FCM's DTG are also part of the process of modernizing the hospital's infrastructure, a modernization combined with the mission of training professionals in the area, valuing the institution's academics. “It is a privilege for the department to be able to count on a hospital like Caism and its team of professionals. This is only possible with everyone's collaboration”, thanked Professor Fernanda Surita, head of DTG.
