Professor Raul Reis Amorim, from the Department of Geography at the Institute of Geosciences at Unicamp, presented in April a technical study at the headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), in Paris, on "Social vulnerability and climate risk and the challenges of resilience policies in Brazil". The presentation took place during the International Conference on Climate Risk, Vulnerability and Building Resilience, organized by Center de Études Avancées em Éducation et Développement Durable (CAESE-CAEDD).
The event brought together researchers from more than 40 research centers, including Imperial College from London, the University of San Andres, the University of Botswana and the University of Southampton, and aimed to propose “reflections on actions in the technical field and advances in research on issues linked to climate risk, vulnerability and resilience development, as well as designing pathways for training skills to the challenges of ecological transition and socially just societies”, as Raul Amorim explains.
The IG professor was invited to present a technical study prepared by Unicamp in partnership with the São Paulo State Environmental Company (Cetesb/SP) and WAY CARBON and financed by the São Paulo State Research Support Foundation (Fapesp) and by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes).
Raul Amorim participated in the Advanced Studies panel, made up of a delegation of Brazilian researchers from the Federal University of Santa Catarina, the State University of Mato Grosso do Sul, the State University of Santa Catarina and the Pontifical Catholic Universities of Minas, São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul. Court counselors, attorneys, prosecutors and representatives of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) also participated, along with a technical team that included professors from Paris Saclay University, the Women of Brazil Paris Group (Sustainability Committee) , directors of European research projects linked to sustainability and French technicians specializing in climate.
CAESE-CAEDD, directed by Mara Rute Hercelin, invited Raul Amorim to visit UNESCO headquarters and to participate in a meeting at the Brazilian Embassy in Paris, where Brazilian researchers met with French and Brazilian politicians to discuss a Brazilian Agenda for Climate. At the meeting, the citizenship for climate methodology was presented, seeking to take into account the citizen and the new challenging issues for the future, in order to find answers to the challenges that Brazilian society needs to face.
Raul Amorim was introduced to Abou Amani, director of the Water Sciences Division and Secretary of the Intergovernmental Hydrological Program. Amorim presented a research project that he directs at the Institute of Geosciences and highlighted the responses in research linked to the climate risk produced by the Institution. O Center de Études Avancées em Éducation et Développement Durable committed to remaining in this dialogue with Unicamp and expanding the discussion network at meetings that will take place in Brazil in the coming months.
