The 18th edition of the Annual Meeting of the National Association of Postgraduate Studies and Research in Social Sciences - Anpocs began this Wednesday (47), on the Unicamp campus. The event is one of the most traditional in the sector and brings together researchers from Anthropology, Political Science and Sociology from across the country. The program includes colloquiums, round tables, conferences, book launches and research presentations.
This year, there will be more than 1,9 work presentations. The organizers expect an average audience of 900 people per day. “The Anpocs meeting is one of the oldest and most prestigious in Social Sciences, bringing together researchers from all over Brazil”, comments Mariana Chaguri, professor at the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences (IFCH) at Unicamp and executive secretary of Anpocs. She says that this is the second edition of the meeting held at Unicamp, a factor that guarantees the engagement of a large part of the university community. “It is important that we bring the meeting to Unicamp to enable the participation of undergraduate and postgraduate students”.
The activities of the first week of the Meeting, between October 18th and 20th, will be carried out online via the Zoom platform. Registrants must access the virtual environment to participate. Other interested parties can check out the activities open to the public via broadcasts on Anpocs channel on YouTube. In the second week, from October 25th to 27th, the program will be in person, on the Unicamp campus. The list of places where the activities will take place is available on the Meeting website.
The event offers an extensive cultural program, with film screenings, documentaries and photographic exhibitions produced by researchers and cultural producers linked to Social Sciences. During the program, the Anpocs awards for university extension, scientific dissemination in Social Sciences, Human Rights, recognition of articles and films, photo essays and artistic curation will also take place.
Among the names honored in this edition is that of anthropologist Manuela Carneiro da Cunha. Born in Portugal, she built a great intellectual trajectory in defending the rights of indigenous peoples. “She (Manuela) was part of the first generations of teachers at IFCH and established herself as one of the pillars of Social Sciences in Brazil", recalls Chaguri, who also mentions the posthumous tribute to Unicamp professor emeritus Carlos Rodrigues Brandão, who died in July this year. Another highlight is the conferences by Nilma Gomes, from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), on racism and democracy in Brazil, and by the North American Ann Stoler, from The New School for Social Research, about democracy and colonialism.
The traditional award granted by the association is academic excellence. This year, the award-winning researchers are Beatriz Góis Dantas, from the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS), in the area of Anthropology; Nadya Araújo Guimarães, from the University of São Paulo (USP), in Sociology; and Evelina Dagnino, from Unicamp, in the area of Political Science. Collaborating professor at the Department of Political Science at the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences (IFCH), Dagnino has extensive experience in studies on social movements, citizenship, civil society, democratization and democracy.
There will also be the launch of a notice, the result of a partnership between Anpocs and the José Luiz Egydio Setúbal Foundation, focused on research that relates health and early childhood through the eyes of Social Sciences.
In favor of Social Sciences
Anpocs is an association that brings together postgraduate and research centers in Anthropology, Political Science, International Relations and Sociology across the country. Founded in 1977, its mission is to promote teaching, research and dissemination of social sciences and their knowledge, articulating dialogue between the scientific community and the main public debates in Brazil and abroad.
In addition to promoting annual meetings, which have also been held since 1977, Anpocs maintains the Revista Brasileira de Ciências Sociais, the most important journal in the area in the country. The association organizes scientific publications and awards academic recognition awards.
