The big winner of the Paepe Unicamp 2023 Award was the work Energy Efficiency Projects, by the Executive Directorate of Integrated Planning (Depi). The awards ceremony took place this Monday morning (11), at the Convention Center, with a packed auditorium. 49 projects were awarded in the Local Awards category and ten more final winners, of which seven received Honorable Mention and three took the biggest awards. The second and third placed were two health projects: Investment in Prevention: the financial impact of reducing hospital infections and Quick Guides for the Rational Use of Blood, respectively.

The winning proposal consists of three projects, describes Adriana Botelho Dieguez, from the first placed team: 100% Led, Sustainability in the Air and More Photovoltaic. 100% Led, already underway, proposes replacing internal fluorescent lamps in buildings with LED lamps. Sustentabilidade no Ar, which is in its initial phase, will replace all equipment from before the year 2000 with more efficient equipment. And the Mais Fotovoltaica project is expected to install photovoltaic systems at Unicamp. Dieguez thanked Professor Luiz Carlos Pereira da Silva for his support and recalled that the entire team – who were unable to fully attend the event – are part of the Sustainability Coordination.

Energy saving

According to Glauco Niro, who received the award alongside Dieguez, the three projects will reduce electricity consumption at Unicamp. “We will save financial resources and contribute to the preservation of environmental resources.” In addition to the trophy, the team received a prize worth R$ 25.170,51, presented by the rector Antonio José de Almeida Meirelles and the general coordinator Maria Luiza Moretti. The second best project won R$16.780,34 and the third, R$8.390,17.

According to Glaucia Beatriz de Freitas Lorenzetti, president of the Paepe 2023 Prize organizing committee, 239 projects were submitted and evaluated this year, prepared by 773 authors (an average of 3,2 members per proposal). Of this total, 106 projects came from teaching and research units, 74 from the administrative area, 51 from the health area (subdivided into Administrative, Nursing, Medical and Technical and Services) and nine from interdisciplinary centers and nuclei. Each of the 49 Local Awards winners received a trophy and the amount of R$8.390,17.

During the ceremony, there was a break in the award presentations for the presentation of the String Quartet of the Unicamp Symphony Orchestra (OSU), which performed four songs with a varied repertoire – one classical, two international (Beatles and Elvis Presley) and one national ( Tom Jobim).

Novelty

One of the new features of 2023 is the fact that the projects will be accessible in the Unicamp Digital Library, said Lorenzetti. “This allows projects to be known and replicated.” The rector reinforced the importance of the award and highlighted the objective of honoring civil servants and administrative technicians who contribute to the improvement of the University.

For Meirelles, valuing employees implies two things: the first is the issue of income and the second, the employee's participation in improving the University's administration. “And the Paepe Prize is the moment for that,” he said. The dean recalled the salary adjustments in the last two years, the creation of meal vouchers and the opportunity for growth with progression, currently in the approval phase. “The resources are guaranteed”, said Meirelles about the progression, also remembering the resumption of civil servant congresses – such as Simtec and Conpuesp –, the creation of the managers’ forum and the creation of two new executive boards, among other projects to benefit of servers.

Created in 2011 with the aim of giving visibility to successful projects by technical and administrative employees, the Paepe Award (Teaching, Research and Extension Support Professional) was interrupted during the covid-19 pandemic and resumed in 2022. “This Awards are a way of valuing work and receiving recognition in units from peers. Even those who didn't receive a trophy can now consider themselves a winner”, emphasized Lorenzetti, who also highlighted the possibility of using collective intelligence inside and outside the University.
