The State University of Campinas (Unicamp) is the third Brazilian university with the highest number of patent application filings in the country carried out in 2023, according to the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI). The rankings of the 50 largest applicants for industrial property rights residing in Brazil, in the years 2023 and 2022, were released this Monday (29) in the INPI website.
Unicamp, through its Inova Unicamp Innovation Agency, registered 40 deposits of the 1.368 patent applications in the INPI Top 50, referring to last year, doubling its participation when compared to 2022. At the top of the ranking appears the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG), followed by the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG).
The associate executive director of Inova Unicamp, professor Renato Lopes, highlights that the good performance in the ranking demonstrates the ability of the University's teachers, students and researchers to transform research results into inventions that can benefit society, with technological, social, and social development. economic and environmental.

For Iara Ferreira, business and innovation coordinator at Inova Unicamp, the result is the result of new strategies to strengthen Unicamp's innovation ecosystem, for the analysis of invention communications and for portfolio prospecting adopted by the Unicamp Innovation Agency .
“We have unprecedented research being developed at Unicamp and in partnerships between the University and other institutions and companies that have the capacity to solve major technological challenges. According to INPI, Unicamp also ranks among the 15 universities that register the most Computer Programs in the country. Inova Unicamp has promoted the protection of intellectual property at Unicamp through specialized training and guidance.
“We recently launched the Guide to Inventions with the aim of guiding the Unicamp community on the different types of asset protection, whether patents, computer programs, cultivars or other modality, and the way to communicate an invention developed at Unicamp for analysis”, commented Elisama Campelo, property supervisor intellectual at Inova Unicamp.
