Anpocs expresses its deep regret at the death of Prof. Luiz Werneck Vianna on February 21, 2024.
Werneck Vianna was president of Anpocs during the 2003-2004 biennium and received the Antônio Flávio Pierucci Anpocs Award for Academic Excellence in Sociology during the 38th Anpocs Annual Meeting, in 2014.
For three decades he was a professor at the former University Research Institute of Rio de Janeiro (IUPERJ) and, later, at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio). Works such as “Liberalism and union in Brazil” (1976) and “The passive revolution: Iberism and Americanism in Brazil” (1997) have become classics in studies on the country.
His intellectual legacy for the Social Sciences is invaluable, and will continue to inspire reflections on Brazil past and present.
We leave our supportive and fraternal hug to the family, friends and colleagues of Professor Luiz Werneck Vianna.
