The partnerships between the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) and the Piracicaba Regional Hospital (HRP-Unicamp) will be expanded later this year, with the opening of new medical residences, the creation of residences in non-medical areas — such as nursing — and the offer of vacancies in internships, innovation and technology fields.

The alignment of cooperation policies and the expansion of the relationship marked the visit of the rector of Unicamp, Antonio José de Almeida Meirelles, this Thursday (29/02/24), to the Piracicaba Regional Hospital (HRP-Unicamp). “We have had this partnership with HRP for a few years now. Unicamp's health area is very strong, being the largest at the university. Having this possibility to collaborate and close more partnerships with the hospital is important for three main reasons. Firstly, because we want to collaborate in assisting the population in the greater Campinas region. Unicamp increasingly wants to be a university whose health area collaborates with the Regional Hospital to improve and improve care for the population. Partnerships are also important to strengthen the training of our students. This is what brings another standard of quality to Unicamp medical students. And there is also the perspective, very relevant today, of generating innovation aimed at improving the health of the population”, stated Meirelles.

The superintendent of Unicamp's Piracicaba Regional Hospital (HRP), infectious disease doctor Vitor Marim, considered that the expansion of the residency program, in the medium term, is in line with the hospital's mission, which is to act in the training of professionals who will provide services to the population. “It is very gratifying to welcome Unicamp's top management and see them supporting the hospital's plan, which increasingly invests in teaching and research. The possibility of expanding the number of medical residencies, which have already been working at HRP-Unicamp since 2019 in General Surgery, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology and, soon, Urology, brings us great satisfaction. The expectation is that we will expand medical residencies, create vacancies for other non-medical areas of health, such as nursing, in addition to creating internships, innovation and technology fields”, stated Marim.

For the executive director of the Health Area (Deas/Unicamp), Oswaldo da Rocha Grassiotto, the new multi-professional residencies should be implemented later this year. “In practice, residencies in medical areas already exist. At the point of implementing multidisciplinary areas, it is not a possibility, it is a necessity. Unicamp already uses the Sumaré State Hospital as an internship site for our residents, but it is already insufficient. So, the next step is Piracicaba, which should take effect in 2024,” said Grassiotto.

The executor of the Unicamp/HRP agreement, William Cirillo, highlighted the various areas that unite the institutions. “We have several partnerships with Unicamp in training our residents. As Unicamp's Hospital de Clínicas has become predominantly high-complexity, residents need training in not-so-complex surgeries, which are of intermediate complexity, in a volume suitable for their training. In this set of data, the HRP is included in the training, because we can offer this opportunity to cover this gap in the training of residents”, stated the cardiologist.
