Unicamp and UFSC receive registrations for Libra courses
14/4/2008
– Through an agreement with the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), Unicamp now offers two distance undergraduate courses: a degree in Letras-Libras and a bachelor’s degree in Translation and Interpretation Letras-Libras. The first of them is preferably aimed at training deaf educators. The aim of the initiative is to train both teachers to teach Brazilian Sign Language as well as translators and interpreters. The selection test for both courses will be prepared by UFSC. Registration for the entrance exam will take place until May 5th, online, on the websites www.libras.ufsc.br ou www.coperve.ufsc.br/. The entrance exam will be on June 1st, at Unicamp, for candidates from the State of São Paulo. The entrance exam will last two hours and 30 minutes for the bachelor's degree, while in the case of the bachelor's degree it takes three hours. The announcement of successful candidates at each center will take place on June 9th. Classes begin on the 28th of the same month. The tests for all of Brazil will be held in different locations, at centers informed on the UFSC portal. A necessary condition for the entrance exam is that candidates for both courses are fluent in Libras. This is due to the fact that the tests take place in this language. To this end, some of the inspectors and appraisers will also be fluent in Libras. The coordinator of the UFSC hub at Unicamp is professor Regina Maria de Souza, from the Faculty of Education (FE). The associate coordinator is professor Nina Virginia de Araújo Leite, from the Institute of Language Studies (IEL). Given the interest in ensuring the highest possible quality, minimizing course dropouts through differentiated support, the Campinas team also includes researchers with experience in the area of Distance Education, such as doctoral student Joni Amorim. The initiative has the support of the Unicamp rectory, through the Educational Project Management Group (GGPE), created with the aim of facilitating and encouraging cooperation actions with other institutions that need to develop educational projects. Coordinated by professor Fernando Arantes, the GGPE has been responsible for different initiatives related to Distance Education within Unicamp, especially with regard to the continued training of public school teachers, in the sphere of continuing education. Also part of the GGPE coordination team are: Armando José Geraldo, Miriam CC Oliveira and José Eduardo Martins. The initiative is of great social importance, given the lack of qualified professionals both in teaching Libras and in using the language for translation and interpretation. Initially, only 60 places will be offered at the Campinas hub.
