Sidney Chalhoub (Organizer)

Gabriela dos Reis Sampaio (Organizer)

Carlos Roberto Galvão Sobrinho (Organizer)

This collection presents results of recent research on healing practices in Brazil, from the 17th century to the beginning of the 20th. It features barbers and bleeders, healers and shamans, apothecaries and prescription doctors, always alongside scientists, writers and doctors, all discussing and applying different conceptions of illness and health to patients. By valuing cultural diversity and the ambiguous and contradictory ways in which various subjects positioned themselves towards the healing arts and their agents, it reveals the wealth of themes still little explored by scholars of the history of medicine in Brazil.
