on agribusiness, take place on the 25th and 26th in the auditorium of the Central Library
Forums debate policies
public services in rural areas,
weather and crop forecast
RAQUEL DO CARMO SANTOS
DAs part of the Permanent Forums on Agribusiness programming, this week, two topics of relevance on the national scene will be debated at Unicamp. On the 25th (Wednesday), participants will learn about the experiences of Campinas and Piracicaba in municipal management of rural areas in the debate on “Municipal Public Policy for Rural Areas”. Another event on “Climate and Crop Forecasts”, on the 26th (Thursday), concerns the current state of crop forecasting in Brazil based on one of the main determining factors of agricultural production, the climate. Both programs take place in the Central Library Auditorium. The “Permanent Forums” project is an initiative of the General Coordination of the University and the Coordination of Institutional and International Relations at Unicamp.
Experiences from Campinas and Piracicaba are discussed
New reality – Studies carried out in the 90s, within the Unicamp Reurbano project, reveal that in recent decades, rural residents have been diversifying their activities and creating new work and income opportunities for the family. In the opinion of professor at the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering (Feagri) Nilson Antonio Modesto Arraes, the opportunity for debate is important to rethink public policies in light of this new reality in rural areas.
Since 2002, Feagri has maintained a research group dedicated to the study of Municipal and Metropolitan Rural Development and the public policies promoted. The research projects, linked to the unit's postgraduate program, deal with food security, Participatory Budgeting in rural areas, producer reproduction strategies, urban agriculture, rural tourism and rural settlements. All with the Campinas region as the study area. In this sense, Feagri's choice of the topic aims to further deepen discussions on the topic.
Agricultural crops – Estimating agricultural harvests accurately and in advance is a sophisticated task due to the diversity of crops, management, soil types and climate found in Brazil. Therefore, the improvement of weather and climate forecasting systems in Brazil has contributed to the data and information generated by these systems being increasingly used in agricultural planning and monitoring activities. The debate on “Climate and Crop Forecast”, organized by Feagri and the Center for Meteorological and Climate Research Applied to Agriculture (Cepagri) will bring to the discussion the importance of prior and accurate knowledge of agricultural crops as something strategic for the country in the sense of plan internal supply and guide actions relating to the external market.
