Professors Antonio Celso Arruda (Faculty of Mechanical Engineering), Edson Moschim (Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering) and José Tadeu Jorge (Faculty of Agricultural Engineering) are the candidates to succeed dean Carlos Henrique de Brito Cruz. The three candidates registered on the 4th. According to the calendar defined by the University Council (Consu), the first round of community consultation is scheduled for March 16th and 17th and the second, for March 30th and 31st. The inauguration takes place in April. Brito Cruz, whose mandate would last until April 2006, was chosen by governor Geraldo Alckmin to take over the scientific directorship of Fapesp.

Brazil has just been promoted to Group IV in the International Mathematical Union (IMU) ranking, now ranking alongside the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, India and Spain. The president of the Brazilian Mathematics Society, professor Sueli Druck, classifies the feat as “admirable” but recognizes that the excellent performance of Brazilian mathematical research is not yet reflected in the teaching of the subject, especially in the initial grades and in public schools. “Currently, research and teaching in mathematics make up distinct and distant worlds”, says Sueli Druck, for whom “children and young people need to have teaching that brings together enthusiasm and creativity”.

At Unicamp's Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Computing (Imecc), Professor Hyun Mo Yang has been coordinating an interdisciplinary research group in biomathematics for 20 years, with applications in epidemiology, immunology, physiology, ecology and agriculture. There are five ongoing studies, three of them related to dengue, one on tuberculosis and a Fapesp thematic project on immuno-epidemiology of infectious diseases. page 5
