“Satire and ingenuity”
Gregório de Matos and Bahia in the 17th century

John Adolfo Hansen
2nd revised edition
It covers the satirical poems of Gregório de Matos, rhetorical treatises of the time and historical documents, such as the denunciations of sins and heresies to the Holy Office and the minutes of the Chamber of Salvador. It analyzes Gregório de Matos' satire based on the rhetorical tradition of the 17th century, in which obscenity and slander are foreseen by precise rules. It invites the reader to a fascinating dive into the classical poetics of Aristotle and Quintilian and the baroque of Gracián and Tesauro.

THE DESERTER
HERO-COMIC POEM
Manuel Inácio da Silva Alvarenga
Edition prepared by Ronald Polito
Published in 1774, The Deserter makes a satirical critique of the habits and behaviors of some of the youth of the period, establishing itself as one of the most important texts for the study of Portuguese-American illustration in the 150th century. This critical edition fills a void in the history of Luso-Brazilian literature from the neoclassical period, almost XNUMX years after the publication of the last complete edition of this work.
