Unicamp in the media

COMMERCIAL GAZETTE

July 12 - The Boldrini Children's Center, a Latin American reference in the treatment of childhood cancer and blood diseases, began construction of a new complex that will provide the institution with a vertical structure for diagnosis and treatment in childhood oncology. The construction of Boldrini, which is already 26 years old and which helped increase the level of cure for childhood cancer in Brazil from 5% to 60%, has become a model structure for the health sector in the country. Managed by an NGO, the hospital it has a management structure that is very different from public institutions, despite maintaining a close academic relationship with Unicamp, from which it was derived.

July 12th - The Brazilian Association of Biotechnology Companies will hold, on July 15th, in Campinas (SP), the Congress Transforming Biotechnology into Biobusiness. The event will be attended by several research institutes, including Unicamp and Esalq, from the University of São Paulo (USP). Development agencies such as Finep and Sebrae will share space with venture capital fund managers, such as Votorantim Novos Negócios, and technology company incubators, such as Cietec. THE STATE OF S. PAULO

July 10 - Tubal ligation and vasectomy surgeries are overcoming cultural resistance - even among doctors - and are no longer just electoral bargaining chips in Brazil. In the network linked to the Unified Health System (SUS) alone, the number of surgeries has increased 20 times in the last four years, according to data from the Ministry of Health. The criteria, however, face resistance from doctors, who consider the 25 year old young woman for surgery. Research by demographer Elza Berquó, from Unicamp and the Brazilian Center for Analysis and Planning (Cebrap), carried out in 2000, showed that only 50% of candidates received assistance.

Correction

The article “Study shows cell phone interference in ICU equipment”, published in the last edition of Jornal da Unicamp, was incorrect. The research was developed by health technologist Suzy Cristina Cabral, based on a concern expressed by nurses at the pediatric ICU at HC at Unicamp. The work, recently published in a prestigious biomedical engineering journal, was presented to a group from a university in Spain, who were interested in reproducing the experience.
