SOCIAL SECURITY - Economist and professor at Unicamp's Institute of Economics Wilson Cano criticized, in an interview with Jornal da Unicamp, the pension reform project sent by the government to Congress. If approved as it is, warns Cano, the project will cause incalculable damage to the public sector. For Rio Grande do Sul senator Paulo Paim, one of the stars of the PT, the government project is “unfair” towards public servants and does not resolve the situation of workers in the private sector. Paim guarantees that “in this proposal, as it stands, there is no condition to vote”.

The computer that speaks Portuguese
A computer program capable of reading aloud any text written in Portuguese, without the English accent characteristic of systems produced outside the country, was developed jointly by researchers in the areas of linguistics and electrical engineering at Unicamp.

The gardener who became the name of a library



Gardener-poet Sebastião Martins Vidal came up with the idea of ​​creating, in 1998, the library of the former Cursinho do Diretório Central dos Estudantes (DCE) at Unicamp, now Cooperativa do Saber. Sebastião went looking for potential donors, most of them clients, and managed to gather a collection of two thousand books in his travels. It was only fair, therefore, that the 1.100 students at the Cooperative knew about the existence of such a unique character. On the 7th, the cram school library was reopened with a name: Sebastião Martins Vidal.
