BIENNIAL
The University in books

Check out Editora da Unicamp's participation in the 16th. Book Biennial

ANTONIO ROBERTO FAVA

O occupying a prominent position among university publishers, Editora da Unicamp participated this year, for the sixth consecutive time, in the 16th São Paulo International Book Biennial, from April 28th to the 7th of this month s. Sharing an 816 m stand with other university publishers — the second largest at the Biennale — Editora da Unicamp occupied its own 80 m space and exhibited its production of 595 titles , including 16 releases, the result of studies, theses or dissertations that became books.

This was the first time in the history of the Book Biennial that the most prominent university publishers in the country were gathered in the same space — the University Book stand. Together, they put more than three thousand titles on sale per year. Editora da Unicamp was part of a pool that included publishers from USP, Unesp, UnB, UFMG, USC, Bauru, UFRJ, Federal University of Santa Maria, the Archive of the State of So Paulo — who work on a joint basis. edition with the Official Press — the publisher of the "Oswaldo Cruz" Foundation (Fiocruz) and the Brazilian Association of University Publishers (Abeu).

For the executive director of Editora da Unicamp, Luiz Fernando Milanez, the Biennale represents, today, a renowned event to encourage reading. "Due to the volume of books we put on sale, we were able to achieve our objective, which is the basic aim of the University, which is to produce and socialize knowledge. And we do this through books, promoting our production o. Furthermore, our works also tell a little about the scientific and technological history of Latin America", says Milanez. At the opening of the event, the vice-rector of Unicamp Fernando Galembeck highlighted the volume of high-quality launches and the fact that the university book occupied the second largest stand at the Biennale. "We are the protagonists of a fertile union, of university publishers and the Official State Press, which has the power to contribute to the cultural, technological, scientific and artistic growth of Brazilian society", he highlighted.

University publishers launch approximately three thousand titles per year, which represents almost 14% of the Brazilian publishing market. Since 1987, the Brazilian Association of University Publishers (Abeu) has existed, which brings together 84 publishers and includes research institutions such as Fiocruz, Embrapa, Ibama, Arquivo do Estado and others. Most of them became professional over time, creating editorial boards and editorial and management projects to replace inefficient administration and operation practices.

For Milanez, it is a privilege to be part of the Biennial, one of the most important publishing fairs in Latin America and the third largest in the world — surpassed only by the Frankfurt Fair and Book Expo America, in the United States. "The fair is also a source of good business and a great opportunity to exchange information, as thousands of students, booksellers, as well as publishers come here."

How to publish
Editora da Unicamp recently published the Guidance Manual — How to publish by Editora da Unicamp?, aimed at those who want to publish their works through the University's publishing house. The publication provides the standards and criteria so that the book can be edited. The first phase refers to filling out an identification form for the author and the work, with all the data: name of the work, thesis, dissertation or collection, for example, copies of the summary of the work. Based on this information, the Editorial Board, based on the Publisher's policy, must communicate whether or not they are interested in publishing the book. According to the Editora's executive director, Luiz Fernando Milanez, it is up to the Editorial Board to define the policy for choosing and publishing the work. It is the Council that will establish the editorial lines and select, after passing the work on for consultation with peer reviewers, the titles that should go to press.

A work will only be considered approved for publication if it obtains favorable opinions and approval from the Council. The booklet also deals with criteria for how the originals should be presented: identification of the work, epigraph, dedication, preface, ear and the details of the textual elements that the author must observe and even careful review standards.
