Unicamp and the European Community carry out research on free software
Unicamp, through an agreement between the Computing Institute (IC) and the European Community (CE), develops joint work that aims to survey profiles of the use of free software in the university, business and software developer sectors. According to Rubens Queiroz de Almeida, from the Computing Center, the EC has already carried out this study in Europe during 2001 and 2002. “Now the consultation has been expanded to countries such as Brazil, Argentina, South Africa and Malaysia. The idea is to better understand the use of free software”, stated Queiroz. The researcher clarifies that in relation to government sectors, this consultation was under the responsibility of the National Institute of Information Technology (ITI), a body linked to the Presidency of the Republic. For those interested in participating in the survey, simply access the page (http://rau-tu.ccuec.unicamp.br/floss) which is based at the Unicamp Computing Center and fill out the forms.
Unicamp Innovation Bulletin expands content and gains English version
After completing three years of dedication to disseminating technological innovations, the Innovation Unicamp electronic bulletin (www.inovação.unicamp.br) presents new features, expanding its content to serve a greater number of people interested in science, technology and innovation matters. The editorial director, Mônica Teixeira, clarified that, in addition to the traditional sessions, the bulletin now features a session dedicated to Unicamp's 40th anniversary, which will show how the University's technical development took place and its uniqueness in the issue of technological innovation. Another session highlights issues relating to the agreement between Unicamp and the São Paulo State Research Support Foundation (Fapesp), within the scope of the Technological Innovation Program in Small Businesses (Pipe). “Two entrepreneurial profiles of companies served by Pipe will be presented and the impact this has had on the companies’ lives”, says Mônica Teixeira. A third session, considered by the editorial director as fundamental, is the English edition of the bulletin. The idea, according to her, is to make people who use Internet search engines find the newsletter and consume its content. “This is an institutional marketing strategy, the result of a diagnosis that Brazil does not sell itself abroad”, she highlights. The Portuguese edition is published every two weeks and the English version is published monthly. To check the content, simply access the Innovation page in Portuguese and English.
