He came on the 5th to discuss the new steps in relations with the University for the realization of a chair common to both countries, with the creation of a Center for Studies of the Americas. Initially, this chair will take the format of a seminar on economics and society, to be held at the Institute of Economics (IE). Afterwards, five Unicamp undergraduate students will be sent to Mexico for an exchange at three Universities - National Autonomous University of Mexico (Unam), Autonomous University of Chapingo and Instituto Tecnológico de Estudos Superiores de Monterrey.

Already made possible, the Chairs Program – financed by Banco Santader – will also include an exchange of teachers to experience, for three months, new experiences in academic life. The Unicamp professor will leave for Mexico next semester and a Mexican professor will return the visit. The signing of the agreement making this partnership official will take place on the 11th at the University.

The rector of Unicamp, José Tadeu Jorge, said that this meeting with Arriola will bring some advances to cooperation. According to him, it will be very beneficial for both parties, not only because Unam is one of the most prominent institutions in Latin America, but also because of Monterrey's strong technological vocation and Chapingo's agricultural tradition.

According to the director of the IE, Mariano Laplane, since the creation of the Institute, a subject on Latin American Economics was offered, then taught by the economist José Serra, current governor of the State of São Paulo. “We must reactivate this discipline and the Chair will be fundamental to repairing a historic debt in the Mexico-Brazil alliance”, he comments.

The coordinator of Institutional and International Relations (Cori), Luís Cortez, believes that these actions to support mobility will lead to the fulfillment of a goal set by the Unicamp Rectory – 10% of students having an international experience.
