Stands with scientific initiation work displayed at the Multidisciplinary Gymnasium: research plant (Photo: Antoninho Perri)

Unicamp's XII Internal Scientific Initiation Congress, which will be held on the 22nd and 23rd of September, at the Multidisciplinary Gymnasium, will bring together 905 works developed by undergraduate students, a number 43% higher than that recorded in the last edition. For the Vice-Rector of Research, Professor Fernando Ferreira Costa, the increase in the total number of projects presented reveals Unicamp's vigor in an area he considers strategic and leader-training.

In 1968, physicist Rubens Murillo Marques (second on the left, in the photo on the side) proposed to the then rector Zeferino Vaz (center) that the Computer Science course be created, the first of its kind in the country. The proposal, received with skepticism in scientific circles, was endorsed by Zeferino. This week, the Computing Institute turns 35 years old. The story of its foundation is told by Luiz Sugimoto and Eustáquio Gomes.

Unicamp tests medicine against multiple sclerosis

Unicamp's Hospital das Clínicas is participating in a global study with a medicine designed to combat multiple sclerosis, a degenerative disease that still has no cure. The studies are coordinated by Professor Benito Damasceno (photo), responsible for the Multiple Sclerosis Outpatient Clinic.

Doctoral thesis by sociologist Maria José Ribeiro rescues the history of the Carioba fabric factory, founded in 1875 in the city of Americana. Photos from the beginning of the 20th century are being cataloged by the Edgard Leuenroth Archive.

Master's thesis warns that pollutants threaten aquifers named by Unicamp in the north of Rio de Janeiro.

The "Gleb Wataghin" Physics Institute will coordinate the National Magnetocaloric Material Research Network, which involves 15 institutions.
