Descrição Projeto | Electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling are ingredients that may endow materials with attractive properties. In this project, we will study variations of a particularly interesting material of this class: Sr2IrO4. Although this family is known to present a fermiology that is similar to cuprates, superconductivity under charge doping has not been observed so far, suggesting the existence of other electronic phases that may compete with superconductivity. A recent Raman scattering and x-ray powder diffraction work by our group shows that application of pressures above ~16 GPa leads to a four-fold symmetry breaking electronic instability in pure Sr2IrO4, which was interpreted in terms of a possible emerging charge-density wave phase at the onset of the metallic phase. In this Masters project, we propose to advance on this topic and carry out isoelectronic cation substitutions in the Sr site, thus obtaining (Sr1-xCax)2IrO4 and (Sr1-xBax)2IrO4 compounds for several x.
