Descrição Projeto | The project goal is to study the electromagnetic wave propagation in photonic crystal structures (PhC), which is a system with modulated periodicity in its dielectric constant. As in the electronic case, the optical dispersion relation for the PhC structure can exhibit forbidden regions for the light propagation inside the crystal, also know as photonic bandgap. By engineering defects in crystal’s periodicity, it is possible to create waveguides and optical cavities. The light confined inside these structures can also interact with its mechanical structure via radiation pressure force, in the so-called optomechanical interaction. A theoretical study of the PhC cavities and the optomechanical interaction will be performed based on analytical and numerical simulations. We also included preliminary experimental investigations on our plan. However, its development is closely attached to the university’s laboratory access policy and could therefore be changed.
