Remarks on Frazer's Golden Bough (Ludwig Wittgenstein) - Bilingual translation into Portuguese and commented notes. Deriva Editores, Porto, 2011. |

"Remarks on Frazer's Golden Bough" is a Portuguese en face translation of portions of MS 110, TS 211, and MS 143, respectively, all of them duly indicated in the text. They belong to a collection of Wittgenstein's commentaries on the work of the evolutionist anthropologist James Frazer, written in 1931 and 1936. It was on the process of reflecting on Frazer's thoughts that Wittgenstein had a glimpse on the method of surveyable presentation that characterized his investigations since then. Wittgenstein begun to consider the practice of following rules as part of conventions and customs based on the natural history of mankind. This method was incorporated into the clarifying and self-critical purpose of his philosophical activity.

The Singularity
of Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations. Physiognomy of the Text. Editora da Unicamp, 2015. (In Portuguese).
|
|
The purpose of this book is to trace a physiognomy of the most important work written by Wittgenstein in the later phase of his philosophical activities. The point of being physiognomic, so to say, is to apply in a Wittgensteinian way the same method the author inherited from Goethe and Spengler, and worked out inspired by Darwin, Freud, Frazer and Weininger, to his own work. For that matter, it presents a portrait of Philosophical Investigations not only as an unfinished book with organic connections with the totality of the Nachlass, but it also takes into account a number of questions regarding writing style, the philosophical significance of expression in contradistinction to description, and why the author's philosophy is so difficult to understand, considering the coexistence in the secondary literature of many incompatible Wittgensteins.
This book is intended to serve as a philosophical description in preparation for a new Portuguese en face translation of the Philosophical Investigations, to be published by the same publishing house probably in 2017, but it can also be profitable to anyone who wants a more comprehensive study of such fabulous work composed by a brilliant and polemical philosopher.

But many long-standing misconceptions in phylosophy are helped to survive by an unwillingness to look carefully
and undogmatically at examples, sometimes protected by a self-righteous image of oneself and one's friends as the
only people who do look carefully and undogmatically at examples (some disciples of the later Wittgenstein come to
mind).
